Green Lipped Mussel provides great support for your horse’s joints. The extract is much more complex than the isolated ingredients that you may be more familiar with, so here’s what you need to know…
Why Green Lipped Mussel for Joints?
Green Lipped Mussel is reputed to be nature’s most potent source of omega-3. There are many forms of omega-3, ALA is the form found in plants. Fish oils are much better sources of omega-3 providing high levels of DHA and EPA. Green Lipped Mussel goes one step further; in addition to concentrated DHA and EPA, it also contains ETA (Eicosatetraenoic Acid), a unique and more bioactive form of omega-3.
Another compound which has been uniquely identified in Green Lipped Mussel is a form of phosphorylated glycogen. This has been shown to inhibit neutrophil activity to support the natural anti-inflammatory process.
DHA is a more complex form of Omega-3 than ALA.
Green Lipped Mussel also contains glycosaminoglycans (predominantly chondroitin sulphate), amino acids and trace minerals. It is the combined effect of Green Lipped Mussel’s full nutrient profile which makes it so effective.
Maoris tribes in New Zealand have long claimed benefits gained from eating fresh Green Lipped Mussel. In the 1960s marine organisms were gaining attention and a study was undertaken to research potential uses. While it was not the primary goal of the study, the group receiving Green Lipped Mussel reported improved joint comfort. As a result the extract was highlighted for further research.
Early studies gave mixed results owing to the variability in extract quality. Since then techniques have been developed to stabilise and preserve the extract. Green Lipped Mussel has been shown to provide effective joint support in humans, dogs and horses.

Nupafeed use GreenshellTM Mussel Powder which is ethically grown in a highly controlled environment. The end extract is that of stabilised, low temperature freeze dried Green Lipped Mussel; a procedure designed to protect the delicate lipid content.
Our Green Lipped Mussel retains exceptionally high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) making it one of the best Green Lipped Mussel extracts on the market. It is certified to contain a typical value of 29.8% Omega-3 in the lipid fraction. The typical total lipid content is 10.7g/100g. Of this 4.2g are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and 3.2g is Omega-3.
Some products may also contain an extract which has already had the majority of the PUFA content removed. The remaining powder can be labelled as Green Lipped Mussel but contains less than one third of the Omega-3.
